The Camphill Communities in Columbia County, NY, hosted the Kaspar Hauser Festivals in autumn 2017, autumn 2019 and spring 2022. The festivals were wonderful opportunities to learn about Kaspar Hauser and explore the spiritual tasks Kaspar Hauser carried out for humanity.
Kaspar Hauser – Riddle of Our Time
Whitmonday 1828…an enigmatic youth bearing the name Kaspar Hauser appeared on the streets of Nuremberg, seemingly from nowhere... His contemporaries experienced his nature and destiny so powerfully that soon he was known as the “Child of Europe”. It was said that in Kaspar’s presence, an angelic being could be felt. Now 200 years later, the unsolved riddles of Kaspar Hauser’s existence still compel us. Today the task is not only to solve beyond doubt the riddle of Kaspar’s true identity, but to ask and explore: What is he telling us now?
Kaspar Hauser appeared at the height of materialistic natural science, yet through his very life and nature he called that hardened world view into question. Are not the central questions of our society still the ones he sparked then? What is the real origin of the human being and the meaning of his destiny? Is not the reality of a divine world conveyed by the gaze of any young child? What significance do these questions hold for the fate of the threatened children of Europe and the world? These global questions are burning at the center of today’s civilization. How are they related to Kaspar – Riddle of our Time?
The festivals took place in collaboration with the Kaspar Hauser Research Circle, which is part of the Karl König Institute for Art, Science and Social Life.
Resolving these questions and solving the historical riddles – this is the mission of the Kaspar Hauser Research Circle. It has taken on the critical work of preserving, processing and carrying further a vast body of precious resources, within a current of research that has been flowing continuously since the 19th Century!
